ABOUT US
The Beginning – 1965
Seeing the need for an adequate water system because the wells of many Webster County residents were frequently impure, mineral ladened, and the cost of utilizing cisterns due to dry seasons were often prohibitive, on October 18, 1965 a petition signed by 78 Webster County residents was filed with the Webster County Clerk To Establish And Name Proposed Water District. On December 13, 1965 an Order Establishing Water District was signed by Webster County Court Judge Ben Herrington. Because of the vision of Texal Brooks of Sebree and others, Webster County Water District (WCWD) was born with three Commissioners on the board: Arnold Tapp of Dixon, Marion Schnapp of Slaughters and Thomas Gene Wallace of Clay.
Once WCWD was established, work began to obtain funds and build a water treatment plant in Onton and to lay distribution lines in the ground to get water to the families of Webster County. After many, many hours of dedication, organization, sweat and labor, the treatment plant was built in 1977 with HUD funds. Water lines were laid with funds from customer deposits and an FHA loan, and WCWD began to sell water in October 1980, with the initial source of water being ground water from two wells.
The Present
WCWD no longer utilizes wells but uses the Green River as its’ source and consists of the following infrastructure: a water treatment plant, an intake structure located on the Green River in Onton, Ky, 7 pump stations, 6 water storage tanks, over 500 miles of distribution line, an office in Dixon. Currently we serve over 2000 customers, wholesale water to the Cities of Clay, Dixon, Nebo and Slaughters and have 5 emergency interconnects with surrounding water systems. In October 2016 WCWD celebrated being debt free. Our staff takes the job of providing safe drinking water to the residents in Webster County seriously.
